Capital rally falls just short vs. Hellgate

Midway through the second quarter in the Bears' Den on Saturday, theCapital High boys basketball team trailed visiting Missoula Hellgate by 18points,.

Fourteen minutes later, powered by a 32-12 run, Capital surged in front ofthe Knights, 47-45, on Matt McGinley's seventh long bomb from 3-point land.McGinley scored 15 of his team's 32 points during that stretch.

The two teams traded the lead for most of the rest of the period, until atrey by Hellgate's Derrius Collins with 1:44 left and teammate Bridger Deden'sfree throw at the 47-second mark gave the visitors a three-point edge. Itturned out to be the deciding points of the game, as the Knights held on for a59-55 Western Conference win in the regular-season finale.

The No. 6 Bruins, 3-17 overall and 2-10 in league play, will host No. 7 BigSky (2-17, 1-11) on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a Western AA playoff game. The winnerwill meet No. 3 Sentinel in Missoula on Friday for a State Tournament berth.

On Saturday, Hellgate led 20-10 after the first quarter, 35-25 at halftimeand 45-42 heading into the final period.

McGinley tickled the twine for 21 points, all of which were scored fromDowntown -- he went 7 for 10 from beyond the arc, finishing just one shy of BenTernes' school record of eight treys in a game. Hellgate's Rollie Worster wasnext with 20 points, followed by CHS' Brad Haller at 18, and Landon Youbles ofthe Knights with 11.

Capital's big comeback was highlighted by several runs, including 13-2 toclose to 35-28 early in the third, and 17-4 to pull ahead 47-45 in the fourth.

The Bruins led three times in the final frame, on McGinley's trey, a pairof free throws by Haller (49-48), and two more Haller baskets (51-50, 53-52).

Both teams shot well from the floor. Hellgate was 54 percent (22 of 41) andCapital was 50 percent (22-44). The Garden City club held a 27-21 reboundingadvantage under the glass, led by Deden's six boards. Haller was high for CHSwith seven rebounds and three steals.
